Sustainability

Getjar recognises that climate change is an issue affecting all aspects of society. We aim to play an active part in tackling the issue by managing our own carbon footprint, promoting low-carbon solutions, and using sustainable products. We have a commitment to become Carbon Neutral for scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions under our direct control by the end of 2030. Additionally, we've made a promise to become Net Zero Carbon by the end of 2040. We laid our cards on the table with our Net Zero Carbon Policy & Strategy document from August 2022. This document set out the timeline and key actions that we'll be taking for the next 18 years. Historically, the construction industry has had a significant impact on the environment. We think that needs to change. We carefully manage the environmental impact of our business in a variety of ways: Our Environmental Management System, fully compliant with BS EN ISO 14001 and certified by the BSI. We source sustainable materials covered by the appropriate certifications, like BES 6001 and UKCARES/Eco-Reinforcement. We use materials with certified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). We reduce our waste and focus on recyclable materials. All our waste goes to facilities that are at least 98% diverted from landfill. We use low emission equipment, including hybrid, electric, and HVO fuel. We invest in off-site manufacturing. We work closely with our clients to ensure their Social Value goals are achieved in many ways. We employ local labourers and apprentices, focusing on nurturing local communities. We also encourage spending in local communities, using Social Enterprise Sourcing to buy products from local suppliers. We support our client's Considerate Construction Scheme (CCS) activities when we engage with the local community, and always encourage site visits. Finally, we make sure that our products and services meet or exceed our clients' BREEAM requirements.

Health & Safety

At Getjar, there’s nothing more important than the safety of our staff and the people around our sites. That’s why we’re proud to be one of the first sub-contractors to put dedicated safety managers on sites. Our ‘Red Hat’ safety coordinators are directly involved in the day-to-day operations of our projects, informing our approach to every situation with a hands-on attitude. We’re always ahead of the game on health and safety, looking to improve our processes and responding to feedback from our employees at every turn. Since our inception, we’ve invested heavily in training and acquiring new equipment to improve our health and safety procedures. Our full time health and safety department provides our site teams with excellent support, and our efforts have meant that one of the biggest insurance companies in the world have formally recognised Masterson Holdings and its subsidiaries as delivering ‘over and above’ health and safety legislation. In addition to these initiatives, we recognise the importance of improving mental health safety across the construction industry. In response to a 2017 vote by the Health in Construction Leadership Group to focus on improving the mental wellbeing of its workforce, we joined the Mates in Mind scheme to provide a collaborative approach to support and services, working directly with our staff members to address their concerns and needs. Our aim in our approach to mental health is to: Raise awareness of mental health issues across the group and our workforce; Help people understand how, when and where they can get support through our trained Mental First Aiders; Break the stigma of mental health by promoting a culture of positive wellbeing across the group. Getjar, and Masterson Holdings as a group, is passionate about improving the safety and wellbeing of the industry at large. That’s why we’re in direct communication with industry supply leaders to make suggestions on industry-wide products and approaches to health and safety. Our origins as a family company committed to keeping lines of communication with our staff members and the construction industry at large continues to this day.

Training

In line with our ethos of continual improvement, we established our in-house training centre in 2014. This allows us to continue to invest in our colleagues and shape the future of the construction sector. The centre helps us to maintain a fully trained, competent workforce that supports sites across all our divisions. By taking an active role in training our staff, we can continue to deliver safe, high-quality projects across our region. Our training centre has a role in many other aspects of our business. It helps our sites to meet Social Value targets by arranging and monitoring apprenticeship provisions for the business. It also makes sure that competency cards, licences and training courses are up-to-date across the workforce. Accredited by NOCN to deliver CSkills qualifications, the centre can train employees in Level 2 & 3 NVQs relevant to their trade. Through on-site assessment and training, our workforce gains their knowledge through direct experience. The centre is also accredited by CITB as an Approved Training Organisation (ATO), allowing us to deliver internal H&S courses to the workforce across all our sites. The centre was created in 2014 to deliver the "Working at Height" course, which remains one of the most in-demand courses in our sector of the industry. Since then, the centre has gradually added more safety training courses to its curriculum to expand and improve training provisions for our workforce. The courses we currently deliver internally include: Working Safely at Height Safety in the Use of Abrasive Wheels Manual Handling Safe Use of Power Tools Traffic Marshalling Fire Marshalling The centre continues to explore opportunities to add new courses to its curriculum. The centre is also an accredited CITB Site Safety Plus Centre, allowing us to deliver CITB's Health & Safety Awareness course and its Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS) Courses
